Parent Groups
There are several different organisations that involve parents within the School and each and very group welcome involvement from as many volunteers as possible.
The Friends of Newcastle Grammar School
'The Friends of Newcastle Grammar School' is the name given to the fundraising auxiliary, that has had a flexible and changing role over the years. In 1996 there were 2 groups, a P&C and a Ladies Auxiliary, which then united to form the Friends of NGS. This group met monthly in Term time and had a Committee made up of a President, Secretary, Treasurer, Spring Fair Coordinator, Social Secretary and Clothing Pool Co-ordinator. The Committee was elected at an AGM held in November each year.
New Direction
In October 2010 the School employed an Events Coordinator to head up the 'Friends', to liaise with and coordinate Volunteers and Year Parent Representatives (YPRs). Under the guidance of the Events Coordinator, these Parents/Carers play a vital role in helping to raise funds for the School, chosen Charities and Community Groups as well as organise social events. Throughout the year the Events Coordinator and YPRs provide the vital link between the Parents/Carers and the Management of the School.
Year Parent Representatives (YPRs)
There are between 2 and 3 YPRs per year group and these people are the main point of contact for other parents in the same year. New parents will be contacted by these YPRs to help introduce them to others within the year and invite them to social events. Their assistance is also sort to coordinate functions during the School terms for their year group - eg. morning teas, lunches or suppers. Some like to organise social functions outside the School - a Year group cocktail party, picnic on the foreshore, etc. The YPRs would love to hear from you if you would like to be involved. Please contact the Events Coordinator for further details on how you can be involved.
ArtsLink is a group of parents who meet to facilitate the Arts at NGS, in the areas of Music, Art and Drama.
Some of the annual functions we help to organise are the very successful Sonnet Stroll,
'Jazz by the Sea',
and Art Exhibitions. The commitment is not an onerous one, and responsibilities are shared between the committee
members.
We invite parents who are interested in the Visual Arts and Drama as well as Music parents to join ArtsLink.
We have our annual student exhibition and plan other activities for both parents and students throughout the year.
Nexus
Nexus is an annual exhibition of prominent Newcastle artists run by a committee.
The exhibitors are all professional artists, some who lecture and make artworks while others are full time artists.
We would welcome anyone who has interest or expertise in the area or who would just like to be part of an exciting
event. Extra hands are always welcome particularly on opening night which is a big event of the Newcastle community.
Tonia Martin would like to invite any interested parents to join the committee. Please contact Tonia Martin for further information.
Friends of the NGS Rowing Supporters
This is a fundraising and social group made up predominantly of Rowing Parents/Carers. With an elected Committee, they organise at least two functions each rowing season, previously including Race Days at the Newcastle Jockey Club at Broadmeadow, Trivia nights and other social nights.
Your support would be very gratefully received and you will find the whole group very friendly and sociable - whether you're a rowing family or not. Please contact the Rowing staff for more information.
