The purpose of education, and a foundation stone of the Newcastle Grammar School ethos, is the development of the whole person. For this reason an educational programme must embody, as an essential element, activities that involve students beyond the classroom and foster the values that result from interaction and united effort. Such activities form a logical extension of the required and general curriculum as well as the elective or special curriculum.

The co-curricular programme at Grammar offers the opportunity for students to be involved in some of these activities. Qualities such as team work, healthy lifestyle and leadership - to name but a few - can be gained by participation in the programme areas of Sport, Music and the Service and Adventure Training Unit (SATU).

Participation in the School co-curricular programme is compulsory for all students. Consequently, parents are expected to support the School in its mission to develop the whole individual by ensuring that their child/children are fully involved in the programme and attend all associated obligations of their chosen activity.

The minimum level of expected participation is one (1) co-curricular activity.

  1. For Years 5 & 6 it is strongly recommended that students select from the seasonal sport option, as they have a good deal of music involvement within their classroom timetable and are ineligible to join the SATU (due to age restrictions).
  2. From Year 7 onwards, students may choose from SATU, music or seasonal sport.

However it is possible, and strongly encouraged, for a student to be involved in a combination of activities, e.g. seasonal sport/s and music, or seasonal sport/s and SATU.

In addition to the co-curricular programme areas mentioned above, an optional fitness programme is available to those students not involved in a seasonal sporting team. It is offered at the Howzat Fitness Centre on Monday afternoons from 3.15pm to 5.00pm. As indicated this is an optional activity and is not accredited as a student's co-curricular involvement.
